Mediterránea zellige tile collection designed for todobarro by Carlos Jimenez and Damian Lopez, showcasing contemporary mosaic patterns.

MEDITERRÁNEA COLLECTION

“Reimagining zellige”

Contemporary perspective on Hispano Arabic heritage

We approached this project with a fundamental question: is it possible to create contemporary designs using a millenary artisanal technique? To find the answer, we immersed ourselves in the geometry of the Alhambra and the intricate world of zellige.

Together with designer Damián López from Leblume, we worked to reimagine this ancient craft through a modern lens. The Mediterránea collection is the result of this exploration, designed for the firm todobarro in a unique collaboration with the specialist artisans at Aït Manos.

Mediterranean inspiration and cultural synergy

After receiving the brief from todobarro, we began a deep study of the manufacturing process. During the creative phase, the Mediterranean sea emerged as the natural link between both cultures and countries, bridging Spain and Morocco as well as the expertise of todobarro and Aït Manos. This shared heritage served as the foundation for a collection that celebrates the fluid exchange of ideas across the sea.

Modular design with six unique patterns

The development process involved numerous trials and prototypes, resulting in six distinct designs. Each family is inspired by elements of Andalusian and Moroccan culture, ranging from the textures of rattan and leather crafts to the geometric lines found in the Alhambra and the shifting surfaces of the Alboran sea. These modular patterns offer endless possibilities for customization in high end architectural projects.

Artisanal craftsmanship and the pre assembled tiling system

Thanks to the meticulous and laborious work of the artisans, these designs were realized as pre assembled tiles in 20x20 and 30x30 cm formats. We introduced this innovative way of presenting zellige mosaics to simplify the installation process, ensuring maximum precision while preserving the authentic, irregular beauty that only handcrafted clay can provide.

Modular tiling system for endless patterns

The collection is organized into six different families of designs. Each family includes various pre assembled tiles that allow for a playful and creative interaction with the space. By combining these units, users and architects can create almost endless patterns, making every installation a unique expression of Mediterranean heritage.

Product development and prototyping process

It took almost two years to bring this collection to life. The first phase required a deep understanding of how zellige pieces are hand cut and how complex patterns are traditionally formed. We then moved into designing and prototyping different geometric layouts. After multiple technical trials and material tests, we finalized the six designs that define the collection today, successfully bridging the gap between ancient tradition and contemporary industrial needs.
